Indian Penal Code, 1860

Section 263A

repealed

Prohibition of fictitious stamps

Why this exists

Postage stamps double as tiny proofs of payment for a government's mail service. This section stops people from creating novelty, fantasy, or fake stamps that could be mistaken for real ones and used to cheat the postal system, while still leaving room for genuinely lawful items (like clearly-marked collector's replicas) that are not meant to deceive anyone. Replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, effective 1 July 2024.
