Indian Penal Code, 1860
Section 247
repealedFraudulently or dishonestly diminishing weight or altering composition of Indian coin
Whoever fraudulently or dishonestly performs on any Indian coin any operation which diminishes the weight or alters the composition of that coin, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.
Why this exists
This section mirrors the previous one but applies a harsher maximum sentence — seven years instead of three — because the tampered coin is specifically Indian coin, again reflecting the recurring pattern in this chapter of treating offences against India's own currency more seriously than the same conduct involving coin generally.
