Indian Penal Code, 1860
Section 231
repealedCounterfeiting coin
Whoever counterfeits or knowingly performs any part of the process of counterfeiting coin, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.
Why this exists
Coins are trusted as valid currency because of the government's stamp on them. Counterfeiting coin undermines that trust, damages the economy, and can defraud ordinary people who unknowingly accept fake money. This section criminalises not just producing complete counterfeit coins but also knowingly assisting in any stage of that process, so that entire counterfeiting operations — not just the final act — can be prosecuted.
