Indian Penal Code, 1860

Section 165A

repealed

Rep. by the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988

Why this exists

Section 165A was originally part of the Indian Penal Code and dealt with the offence of abetting or offering bribes to public servants. When Parliament passed the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 to consolidate and strengthen anti-corruption law in one dedicated statute, it repealed overlapping IPC provisions like this one so that all corruption-related offences would be governed by the new, more comprehensive Act.

Common misconceptions
  • Myth: Section 165A of the IPC can still be used to prosecute bribery today.
Fact: It was repealed in 1988; bribery offences are now prosecuted under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
