Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023
Section 275
Conviction on plea of guilty
If the accused pleads guilty, the Magistrate shall record the plea as nearly as possible in the words used by the accused and may, in his discretion, convict him thereon.
Why this exists
For minor summons-cases, this allows quick resolution when the accused simply admits the offence, while requiring the plea to be recorded in the accused's own words (not paraphrased by the court) so there's an accurate, verifiable record of exactly what was admitted. It mirrors section 252 of the earlier Code of Criminal Procedure.
